Masakit, Mahirap

malunod man ang mundo
magkagulo-gulo
pati sa isip mo
meron pa din tayo
matunaw man ang bituin
mapagod man ang ihip ng hangin
iyong alalahanin

Heartstrings: [No Subject]

This episode is dedicated to the oldest and, supposedly, the wisest of our batch: Archie. Archiebald. My Camiguin partner, the vacation could never be as fun as it was without him. My constant music partner, Mr. Disco, and James Ingram wanna-be. Archie is one of the wisest man I've ever met when it comes to matters in life. He never fails to astound me with his opinions on things and his seemingly uncomplicated way of looking at life. I guess Archie rubbed to me in a way that I look at things in black and white. To the panganay of our batch...raise the tequila!

My dearest friends,

It’s been roughly 2 years, 9 months and 12 days since I first met most of you in this office and now, following the lead of those who have made their own exits, I am saying my formal goodbyes. The past few weeks (and those coming, I expect) have been very bittersweet, obvious in moments of nostalgia and reminiscing (which seems to be the theme of most conversations lately. That, and moving-out plans. J). Nalulunkot ako dahil nalulungkot ako…the feeling I felt when I told Miki na “’Eto na, nararamdaman ko nang malapit na tayong maghiwahiwalay…”

Let me start by saying my sincerest thank you to all of you. The experience was truly a blast. I am very lucky to be in the company of such beautiful and wonderfully smart and weird people. I hope that even if I miss thanking you sometimes, you still feel the gratitude that wells in my heart. Alam ko cheesy yung last line, pero that doesn’t make it any less true.

I have one simple request before this ends. Like how we felt after high school and college and that our barkadas will remain that way and but eventually separates, I hope that this friendship will stay true. To borrow a line from the book The Rule of Four: “Like all things in the universe, we are destined from birth to diverge. Time is simply the yardstick of our separation.” Let us prove that wrong. Let us not be strangers 3, 5, 10 years from now. A call or a simple message to let everyone know of the milestones in our lives (new job, promotion, new love, marriage, whatever) will bring me comfort that all is not forgotten.

That’s it I guess. I truly wish everyone a wonderful life.

‘Bye!

Wanderlust Episode 2: Baguio

Baguio has lost its appeal to me over the years that I was growing up. That it has become polluted and too crowded as a tourist destination, and with nothing new to offer aside from the cool weather, a trip to the valley does not a spark excitement in my belly. But lately, the company of very good friends (and more :D) makes me all gilly to look forward to pack my warm clothes and savor the taste of strawberries as we traverse the 6-hour long climb to the destination that is known as the City of Pines.

Ascend to Heaven
Travelling on a 6-hour bus trip when you haven't had sleep for almost 48 hours is never comfy. Migraine starts to escalate when I haven't even packed yet, totally impairing my judgement on what to bring and how to fit everything in my luggage. Being a woman, I have the implied right to overpack and exaggerate my wardrobe *teehee*. We planned to board the 2pm bus trip, but due to unforeseen circumstances (other word for OVERTIME), I finished packing and stealing a 30-minute nap at past 4pm. So we arrived at the terminal shortly before 5pm, and we were informed that the next comfy seats are available at the 6pm trip. So we snatched ourselves to a quickie at timezone G4 for an hour before we boarded the bus. About 3 hours later we were having dinner at Tarlac. 2 hours after that and our ears were starting to pop as we put on our jackets and endure the cool air seeping into our skin. An hour more and we set our foot on the valley of Baguio.

Day 1: Sights and Sounds of Everlasting Sustenance
We went straight to the DENR cottage to spend the night as it was too late a time to hunt for lodging when we arrived. Penha wanted accomodations where we can cook, and we were supposed to stay at another DENR cottage. However, surprise surprise, the cottage did not look appealing and be infested with ghosts and other supernatural creatures God knows what, so we spent the whole morning hunting for an inn with a kitchen after we had our breakfast at Session Road. We found one along the tip of Marcos Highway just outside the skirt of Baguio City town proper for P1,650 per night for two days. Not bad. We don't need airconditioning at this part of the Philippines and at least there's hot water. Well, for a day we had hot water at least. Oh well, there's always a setback for every roadtrip. :)

We ate at a mongolian buffet at Hotel Veniz for lunch, and I had a strawberry milkshake that made my insides jiggle. 'twas sooooooo good! How come strawberries won't grow in abundance here in Manila? As I've said over and over again, life is not fair. *sob* Baguio was a bit crowded during this date since a holiday fell on a Monday making it a long weekend. Busy bees usually take this opportunity to escape from the hazards to the body and the sanity brought by the busy life in Manila, and they would take great lengths to leave it as far as possible. Baguio is the only commercialized cool tourist destination there is, thus they bring some of the pollution here from where they came. Pfffft.

We rushed to the botanical garden and mines view park after our late lunch. The usual stuff is there: the Igorot huts, the flowers, the vendors and their wares confusingly displayed in their shops, the rip-off Igorots that'll kill you with their spears if you don't hand over money for taking a picture with them, and of course...the food! Taho (which now comes in chocolate and strawberry flavors), grilled and boiled corn on the cob, grilled dried pusit, and more strawberries. It feels so nice to enjoy good food on a cool weather, so we were filling our bellies while enjoying the colors of Baguio's diverse fora. In a kikay collegiala voice, I'd say "me likey the sunflowers!" and tick off penha to the highest level. God, that sounded so gay didn't it?

After hoarding on pasalubongs of lengua de gato and chocolate flakes, we went straight to the wet market to do some shopping on food. I feel like I'm walking in fairland as I feast my eyes on the contrast of colors of trays and trays of fresh vegetables, fish, meat, and whatever it is you need. You will not find their wet and dry market wanting, and the cheap tags on the vegetables will make you want to live your dying days there to prolong your life even more. The plump cherry tomatoes and miniature versions of the pechay baguio and the green of brocollis and legumes and cabbages, ah my eyes popped out of their sockets!

Day 2: Cooler Loving
The food fest we had the night before went straight to our feet we couldn't step out of the room to do more sightseeing. Add to that the hefty breakfast of longganisa vigan, salted egg with cherry tomatoes, and fried rice that we had earlier in the day. We slept all day and woke up at 3 in the afternoon, afterwhich we rushed to Good Shepherd to buy fruit jams hoping that we'd get there on time because the store closes at 5pm. Good Shepherd Convent makes the most wicked fruit jams, preserves and chutneys famous not only in Baguio but all over the Philippines, and it sits on one of the highest peaks in Baguio. Thank God we made it, and we brought our loot back to the inn before heading to Camp John Hay to have a taste of everything nice's cassava cake. Too bad the bakery ran out of cassava cakes for the day, and we had to go all the way there only to find out that the main bakery was just sitting about half a kilometer away from the inn we were staying!

We left Camp John Hay and went to Burnham Park. We gobbled on isaw (grilled chicken intestines) before hopping on to a boat in the park's man-made lake. After that we rented a pair of bikes for an hour, and by the end of it we were starving so we rushed to this restaurant in Burnham which sadly is already closed by the time we got there (around 9pm). So we have to settle for a resto along Session Road and treated ourselves to a pot of Sinigang na Baboy (pork stew in tamarind broth).

On the way there we stumbled across vendors displaying their wares on the cold tiles of the street, laughing our asses out on the hideous toys they were selling. More ridiculing, and what do you know! We found treasures for P25 each! I got myself two tarepanda miniatures and he got a Domokun! Haha, we were having a hard time finding cheap versions of them here in Manila and we found them in Baguio. Chunky Farflung sells Domokuns for eight freaking hundred bucks each.

The following day was Penha's birthday, so as he was taking a bath that afternoon before going to Good Shepherd I snatched away to everything nice to buy him a surprise Sans Rival cake. When the clock striked 12mn I brought out the cake and lighted the candle to Penha's surprise. He made his wish, and we gobbled on a few slices before hitting the sack. :D

Descent to the Mortal World
We went home after dinner, got up the next morning for breakfast, and dressed up for our trip
back to Manila. About six and a half hours later, we were back in Makati. The dream is over, and we are back to endure the excruciating summer heat and pollution that is Manila. We ate an early dinner, and went to timezone (again) to cap the day.

Each episode of wanderlust with Penha keeps getting better and better. In Baguio we would just cuddle up beneath the sheets, enjoy the cold crisp air and feast on the sights and sounds of the valley, and moving around as if we are not bound by time...it's definitely one of my best Baguio trips ever. :)

Chinatrust Fires External Auditor

Chinatrust (Phils.) Commercial Bank Corporation (CHTR), a Taiwanese bank, has decided in its Annual Stockholders Meeting to fire its external auditor, Laya Mananghaya & Co. (LMC), a member firm of KPMG, for incompetence, based on a strongly-worded corporate disclosure the bank sent to the Philippine Stock Exchange on Monday.

Based on the disclosure, LMC has failed to deliver competency and quality in its work as certifying auditors of the bank, due supposedly to limited exposure of the engagement partner and the firm in standards and practices applicable to the banking industry, and poor service despite the bank's effort to communicate the firm's weak points at the conclusion of its 2004 audit. LMC was appointed as external auditors of Chinatrust for the 2004 and 2005 calendar years.

In an addendum to the statement it made earlier, the management of Chinatrust through its President and Chairman, made clarifications referring to the original statements as "merely opinions of some members of the Bank's Audit Committee expressed in a meeting, and do not necessarily reflect the conclusions of the Bank". It has furthermore stated that "the change of the external auditor is part and parcel of the Bank's corporate governance practice which requires a thorough evaluation of vendor relationships on a regular basis".

It can be recalled that LMC performed due diligence review on the books of UCPB the result of which will then be the basis of PDIC's approval of a debt-to-equity conversion deal with UCPB. Based on the deal, PDIC will purchase a total of P13 billion worth of Non-Performing Loans (NPLs) as UCPB is in need of fresh capital infusion back then. LMC's performance on the engagement was heavily scrutinized by critics of the business community, describing the engagement team's performance as biased, inefficient and incompetent.

Mario T. Mananghaya, managing partner of LMC, expressed great disappointment on the statement released by Chinatrust, stating such publicity "has created tremendous concern from our clients, our people and our international affiliation". He added that the said statement brought agonizing pain among many members of the firm. Furthermore, the statement was released on the eve of San Miguel Corporation's announcement that it has appointed LMC to be its external auditor effective 2006. San Miguel Corporation is the Philippines' largest publicly-listed food and beverage conglomerate.

LMC has battled bouts of mismanagement and staff incompetency over the past years, with mass resignations and scandals plaguing its walls. I, for one, am a witness to the inefficiency of the way business in run within the corners of the 21st and 22nd floors of Philamlife Tower. However, unlike San Miguel, I knew when it was time to step out the door, that was shortly after Jaime Laya left while the firm continues to benefit from his good name. Pats to Chinatrust for finally opening its corporate eyes and see what LMC is really all about: profit.

On Zsa Zsa Zaturnnah

Babala: Para sa mga Mature Readers Ever!

I was able to watch a re-staging of Zsazsa Zaturnnah: Ze Musikal at the PETA Theater last April 22 with Penha. And boy, wasn't that the most worthy of my P1,400 or what?! The show was fabulous! I was laughing my ass out the whole time, and there was no dull moment during the entire 3-hour run of the show.

The play is based on
Carlo Vergara's graphic novel of the same title. Superfluous with flamboyance oozing with homosexual innuendos, the play was sure to strum on your funny bone what with their witty exchange of antics that were bursting with gayness and humor. Of course, what better way to deliver the lines that were written by a gay writer than a gay cast? No, not just fairies, but also by what are now called babaeng bakla.

Eula Valdez's performance came as a suprise for me. I am not a fan of Kampanerang Kuba nor have I watched one full episode of it, so I was not aware that Eula can actually sing. What's more, her acting prowess was astounding given the fact that she has not done theater before and may have been used to many takes of her scenes in TV and movies. Plus, she has a kick-ass body for a 35 (36?) year-old woman that she pulled Zaturnnah's Japayuki-inspired t-back costume damn well. Life is indeed not fair huhuhu...

Zaturnnah's villains were drop-dead hilarious. From the giant frog (for which the townsfolk used action figures to represent themselves so'd the frog would appear gigantic) to the walking zombies (who eventually appeared to be gay as they were undressing Dodong instead of eating him alive) to Femina and the Amazonistas, it was all so apt for the stage adaptation. Too bad Agot Isidro did not play the role of Femina as she did for the CCP staging, but what the heck. I had a grand time watching their asses whooped by Zsazsa at nobody can change that. Heehee.

Aling Britney was first portrayed very well as a walking zombie more frightening that the living dead, only to be transformed by Ada at the latter part of the show. Dodong defied all expectations from his godly physique by surprising the audience by his singing talent. And Didi...ah Didi. The gem of the show. I can't imagine the flow of the show if they hadn't cast Joey Paras for the role. He supposed to had only filled in for Ricci Chan, and I was glad that he did. Hahaha, I still laugh like a buffoon whenever I recall whatever line of Didi. Most memorable line: "Hoy pogi!" (while making a gesture of offering a blow job. Didi is in a hospital gown with a dextrose in one hand and a dextrose hanger in tow. And of course, a roller in the bangs)

All in all, Penha and I enjoyed the show immensely that we forgot all about the squabble we had the night before. Ahehe, nothing but a good laugh to chase your blues away. :)

*Grunt*

This is not me. But this is mine.

It is by the goodness of God that in our country we have those three unspeakably precious things: freedom of speech, freedom of conscience, and the prudence never to practice either of them. - Mark Twain

This is candy. Donut. Paper roses on a silver tray. And I am now robed in another's clothes.
